February 12, Tuesday

Yes that’s right. You will not see an entry for Monday, February 11th. We crossed the international dateline going west and lost a day. Just skipped right to Tuesday. We’ll make it up because we turn back the clock an hour every few days and as a result will do that 24 times by the time we come home.

By the way, it really is true that water goes down the drain counter clockwise south of the equator and clockwise north of the equator. Weather here is beautiful and the islands around Fiji are quite a sight as we come into port. There are over 300 islands that make up the nation of Fiji and about 100 are inhabitable.

We docked in the city of Latoka and toured the island including a typical village. Apparently all the natives live in villages that are communities with their own chiefs and schools. We found Fiji apparently a more economically viable community than American Samoa even though the people are not as well educated. Based on what I was told, parents pay about $5 a week for children to attend elementary school and more to go to higher educational instututes.

We saw natives dancing and singing in their local costumes and they were very good. Apparently cannibalism was pretty common in these islands up till the 1800s. We then took a harbor cruise and had lunch on the way back. While temperature was in the 90s it was fine as long as you weren’t in the sun.

Dinner included a Sicilian dessert made of ice cream and meringue. The entertainment consisted of the winner of an American talent search in the category of comedy – I would have hated to see who the runner up was. I’m starting to think my standard of entertainment is too high – or else the booking agent for these people was given a tough budget.

Fiji legend has it that there is a sleeping giant in the mountains seen from the ship – can you see him?
On to New Zealend
