Sydney, Australia.
What a beautiful day. Not a cloud in the sky as we sailed into Sydney Harbour. 50 small ships escorting us as the sun came up with 4 helicopters overhead and maritime boats making sure no one interfered. We came right up past the Opera House and docked between it and the Harbour Bridge. At 630 in the morning there were people lining the docks and quays surrounding the harbour to greet us. We were given Australian flags to wave in greeting.
After an early breakfast we left for our morning excursion – the Opera House (150 steps to see the concert hall) which has no accessibility accommodations, Bondi Beach – small but very popular and beautiful, and a tour of the city itself. We got back around noon and had time for a quick lunch – hamburgers and fries – and a change to shorts – it’s warmed up to 80 but no humidity and not maybe one cloud. At 2 we got on a boat for a cruise around Sydney Harbour, which included afternoon tea. The harbor and it’s bays and inlets is huge and the homes that line it are stunning. Apparently Sydney’s real estate prices are third behind New York and London (although I wonder where Tokyo fits into that).
In the middle of the day we called Frank and spoke with him awhile (and Bailey ) then called John since we missed him the other night when we called and spoke with Steph, Jackson, Griffin, Sadie and Scarlett. Sounds like all is well but we miss everyone.
We made it back to the ship by 415 and managed to shower and dress (we had room service for dinner) and rest up a little before leaving for the opera. We were taken in private cars and given programs and binoculars each. Up 150 steps, maybe more our seats were in the balcony. We saw a wonderful performance of A Masked Ball by Verdi, great music, performances and costumes (they had English subtitles across the screen over the stage).
Back to the ship totally exhausted by 11pm, but looking forward to another day in Sydney. The QE2 is supposed to arrive in port and when we leave they’re going to switch places with us as part of a big harbor celebration.
