March 18th, Tuesday

We arrived in Singapore early this morning to a very nice day. Partly cloudy and not too hot or humid. After breakfast we decided to take the shuttle to downtown Singapore and wandered around the shopping area there and had some coffee and tea on the boulevard till shops opened. I used an ATM in a 7/11 to get Singapore dollars which are 1.32 to the US dollar. After it looked like we’d have to wait a good hour, we decided to take the metro to Chinatown. No problem there – the system is easy to use and cheap. It turns out we were only 15 minutes away and it was air conditioned. Since everything is in English as well as Chinese and Indian, we had an easy time getting around.

We found a great shopping center full of all kinds of stores for local residents with everything from jewelry to clothes to nick-nacks to dvds. We spent about an hour there and bought various little gifts for friend and family. The Chris wanted to go back to a department store that had women’s clothes on sale. Needless to say after an hour she bought nothing and we were both tired and hungry.

We struck out and went one block up a mall type of walk way that was filled with little shops and sidewalk restaurants and we had a great lunch of sweet and sour pork, fried wontons and pork and Singapore noodles. After that Chris shopped some more and we finally decided we were too tired to do any sight seeing. Back on the metro (which has escalators and moving sidewalks) and after getting back to our original stop it turns out there was a $1 deposit on each of the fare cards. As a result the metro for both of us cost $4.80 Singapore $ round trip. Considering it’s ease, cleanliness and comfort, it’s a great bargain.

We got our shuttle bus at the Grand Hyatt and were in our cabin by 3pm. Since this is the start of a new leg, from Singapore to Dubai, it looks like 800 people got on. You can tell who they are – they’re dazed and haven’t learned how to tell by the carpet color which side of the ship they’re on or how to get fore and aft.

No one joined us at dinner tonight, so we won’t know until tomorrow evening if we’re going to have company or not. We had a light dinner to make up for our lunch – I still had dessert – apple strudel with vanilla ice cream, but I rationalized that I had walked at least two miles in the heat.

Tomorrow we arrive in Port Kelang, Malaysia and tour Kuala Lampur. Fortunately I didn’t take too many pictures in Singapore so I won’t get too far behind in my journal updates with pictures.
