March 20th, Thursday

We moored in Penang Harbor around 7 am and were on our ferry by 830. It only took about 10 minutes to get to shore and we were on our bus and headed for our excursions on time. Our tour guide was great. She had a good sense of humor, was knowledgeable and very friendly. We went to one Chinese temple on a hill that took a lot of stair climbing and only made it up to the second level. It was beautiful and apparently very wealthy and is expanding. Yet all around the approach to the temple were small booths of people selling all kinds of goods.

Our next stop was to see two temples side by side. One had a large reclining Budha and was very well decorated. It was a Thia Buddhist temple. The second temple was a Burmese Buddhist temple with shrines and beautiful statues and decoration. Believe it or not, we then were taken to a large upscale shopping mall for an hour before lunch. The island is very diverse and beautiful. It clearly is a growing resort island and tourism is a it’s top industry with microchip manufacturing second.

Our lunch was in a first class hotel near the beach. All kinds of dishes, Thai as well as Chinese and Pasta to be had and of course desserts. There was also some very good Malaysian entertainment of dancing and music. It was an enjoyable lunch.

After that we went to a butterfly farm, which was interesting and offered lots of picture opportunities. It also had a scorpion pit with hundreds of scorpions. What fun! It was a good day and we made it back to the ship by 430 to shower and get ready for dinner! (One meal interrupted by sleep, entertainment and excursions).

The new couple that were at our dinner table last night didn’t show tonight and we suspect they got a table for two that they wanted. No big deal since our reaction to them wasn’t good.
