April 13th, Sunday

We woke up to the ship passing the Isle of Capri as it entered the bay of Naples. After breakfast we took a walk into Naples to tour the San Carlo Opera House up on the hill overlooking the harbor. We also bought some pastries to bring back to the ship, Canolis and Sfogliatella. After walking back to the ship and resting a while we went up to the Lido to have pizza for lunch and of all things they had no mozzarella for the pizzas and made them with cream cheese – ugh! The explanation for this was that the shipment arrived spoiled? Infamnia!

After lunch (if you can call it that), we left for our tour of Hurculaenum. It was buried under 75 feet of lava and mud at the same time as Pompeii but wasn’t discovered until the late 1800s and early attempts at unearthing did more damage than good. Our tour guide took us on a walk through the ruins for about 2 hours and as he described it – Pompeii was Las Vegas to Hurculaenum being Beverly Hills. There were amazingly well preserved frescos as well as beautiful homes and shops that have been restored.
Chris and I were very tired after this long day of walking and after a dinner at the Lido we collapsed in our room to get rested for Citavecchia tomorrow
